Being non judgmental is key. Compassion and professionalism very important. Self reliant and self motivation also helps. But most of all communication and honesty with client, family members and your employer when you don’t know something ask.
Know how ventilators work, learn how to insert tracheas and g tubes. Be prepared for rude or under the influence of family members. Be ready that homes are sometimes dirty. Do not drive a flashy car to the patient's home.
Good knowledge base of wound care, diabetes care and compassion. Listen, listen, listen.
Knowing your surroundings. Understanding what signs to watch for and use all your resources for your patients.
Be ready to teach both the clients sometimes their families on client care/treatment. Wear your scrubs and carry your company badges with you at all times. Be sure not to wear expensive Jewries and wedding rings to clients house.
Always check and secure your exit routes when in a clients home, leave the house immediately if the client or the family member ask you to leave then report to your supervisors and document accordingly.

Home health is a very mixed environment. Your skills in general medicine, work well, pediatrics, and Infusion nursing. I did home health for over 30 years. It was the best area for me to work, you really get to help your patients in their home environment, and practice independently.
