I'm considering going to nursing school but wondering if it's the right move. I have a 3 year old and a fiance. Only problem is I'm the main source of income. Should I try or nah?
I've had peers that were in similar situations that graduated along with me, so it is possible. Some people worked non-healthcare jobs while in school. Some of us also worked paid internships within the hospital while in school. It helped with practicing skills and getting comfortable with the hospital environment, as well as putting money in our pockets. Nursing school does require hard work and time, it can be taxing. You would have to schedule and find a balance. Educators have even helped us with understanding how to do that throughout school. When you get a chance, talk to administration over the programs that you may be interested in for further advice as well.
You would probably only be able to work part time while in school if that. It's a pretty big commitment especially once you start clinicals. Would your fiance be able to take care of your 3 y/o?
Obviously, you need to live! You have to evaluate if you can afford the commitment ( cost, time, family) only you can make that decision. Depending on your route, you can look at 2 years nursing programs as well since we keep hearing about the shortage. Best Wishes to you!
