The answer is not simple as there are many types of wounds: pressure injury, surgical, laceration, puncture, abrasion, gun shot. It is best to assess the what type of wound you are dealing with and then get orders for how to clean and dress. If you are in an acute care setting, you will need provider orders before you clean and dress a wound.
