How do you handle the emotional toll of caring for patients while still taking care of your own emotional well-being?
I work in Cardiac/Telemetry and it's not always a good prognosis. Plus, patient care can also be tough emotionally and physically. Having a good culture/environment in the workplace I've found to be very helpful and then coming home and having a good supporting family/friends. Also at my hospital (I don't know if they offer it at every one) they do have a team that supports nurses emotionally that they offer in case a nurse truly needs the help. They offered it to me after a patient punched me multiple times. It was helpful.
I worked PCU for about 5 months. I lived the job, but I had to quit to protect my license. They were loading me up with 8 patients (PCU should have no more than 4 on day shift). Anyway, after every code, no matter the outcome, there were ALWAYS debriefings with all parties involved; someone from HR would always attend these in case emotional support was needed. Also, at every hospital I’ve worked at, employees had free access to an employee-only team of social workers, psych nurses, and psychologists for nurses who were having emotional problems, stress, and burnout, to name a few.
