Absolutely not. This can be construed as patient abandonment and will cost you your license in most US States and Territories. Inform yourself instead. All nurses must be educated about HIV, and once you know what you are working with you will fear it less and use proper precautions. Do NOT treat HIV patients like the lepers of ancient times. They are humans and deserve the same excellent care one hopes you give to your other patients.
I don’t think you can refuse to care for pts. remember it’s better to know they have it vs caring for all other pts that you don’t know what illness they have. You can get HIV from needle poke, sexual intercourse etc. I would recommend you educate yourself on HIV. Someone of them their viral road is 0 that they can’t transmit it!
I have cared for HIV patients. As long as you use strict isolation to protect yourself, you should not have a problem. I would never refuse a patient care.
No need of refusing
No
NOPE.
I suppose if you feel that uncomfortable
No
No
I do not think so
May I ask the reason you would not want to care for HIV patients?
