How does one get into wound care nursing? Do they usually want prior experience or do lots of places train you in the role?
It depends on where you apply- it's like most nursing areas, you learn as you go. I had no real experience other than what you get in your normal hospital nurse training. Though I did have more experience from working as a Psych Correctional Nurse ๐. Check into a company called Healogics. They are usually partnered with a hospital but it's an outpatient clinic setting and they either send you for training or do it virtually (since Covid). On a side note, it's a For Profit company (in case you're planning/needing Loan Forgiveness in the future) I LOVE wound care- you see and smell a lot of gross stuff, but if you're not squeamish, it's great! Feel free to message me if you need.more info!
The gold standard for certification in wound and/or ostomy and/or Continence care is the WOCN - Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Society. www.wocn.org.
To learn about certification in the WOCN review the website WOCNCB.org.
There is so much to learn in this specialty. Find out where and when conferences and seminars are being given. Attend as many related programs as you can. Who are the vendors in your facility? Talk to the reps. Ask to be invited to educational programs. There are so many books and journals related to wound care. Ask to work with the wound care nurse/team in your facility. The learning never ends, especially after you get certified.
I earned my BSN/RN 50 YEARS AGO and retired 4 years ago after a wonderful career; 23 years as a Certified WOCN. WISHING YOU SUCCESS.
