How long does it take to become an OR RN? I am currently a PACU RN
Hello. I don't know about every hospital, but my friend had to go through a six month training program. She was a Pacu nurse. I hope that helps.
Have you shadowed an OR RN? If not, you should. Depending on your facility, it can be very hectic. You are pushed to turn around rooms quickly so it’s stressful AND your report to PACU can be compromised d/t inadequate time allowance. The surgeons can be very tense and unpleasant.
PACU, after years of critical care and infusion experience, was my favorite place to work. It’s critical care but you stabilize the patient…you don’t have to fix them.
To answer your question: again, depending on your hospital, they will train you as an OR RN. They typically like a PACU RN bcz you have a knowledge and experience with the surgical services environment.
