Any school nurses who quit? What were the main reasons you did? What did you do after?

I did. I quit after 21 1/2 years. Main reasons were a lack of support from administration, second guessing my decisions in lede threatening situations, disrespect directly to my face from other staff members. The kids and their parents were great. What did I do after? I retired and am collecting a state pension.

I work at a high school and safety is my biggest concern. We have fights daily and I've responded to 2 stabbings and other critical injuries second to these. In addition, drug overdoses are on the rise and I've administered Narcan once. Horrifying. In addition to the students, I provide care to staff whose health is proving challenging. We have had two cardiac events and a stroke during these first 3 months of school. Usually I see one case per year. So thankful I was here to support them, but as the only medical professional in the school, it's a huge responsibility and you never know what the day will bring. Autonomy has its risks and benefits.

Unlike other responses, my pay is excellent. My district has us on the teacher contract which pays us according to years of experience and education. I'm almost at the top of the pay scale (currently $85/hr) which I'd never get at the hospitals here AND no weekends, nights, holidays, and summers off. I don't work as many hours as a hospital nurse, but the pay more than evens things out. Insurance benefits are incredible.

However, I'll be the first staff member to resign if we have a shooting. (Assuming I survive).

I have not quit yet, but I’m thinking about it. I love the job, the kids, the staff, the schedule, weekends off etc etc however, the pay is very low. I’m not sure if I want to give all that up for money.
