If you ever had to float to another department from Med/Surg, which department would you love to go to?
As a new grad I was pulled up to ICU
I loved it. I was pulled up to the ICU almost weekly. When an opening came in the ICU
I didn’t get it because they saw II didn’t have enough experience. And the very next day I was pulled up to iCU again. I was hurt and then angry. I took a 6 week CCU course and applied to and got the CCU job. And when our census was low I still got pulled to the ICU and had a full assignments with drips, monitoring, and responding to codes throughout the hospital. Then our hospital combined the ICU and CCU. I really liked the diversity I always say the difference between a CCU nurse and an ICU nurse is that the CCU nurse is always in a crisp clean uniform. The ICU nurse is splattered with blood and other fluids. I’ve always loved the challenges. I was great at drawing blood and starting IVs.
Nobody likes to flt
I would like the ER. It’s fast paced.
If I ever had to float to another med/surg department, I would like to go to the pre- and post-operative care department.
In my experience the float experience is impacted more by the staff than by the Dept. Sometimes the float staff are assigned the pts no one wants, or the Dept is staffed by people who won’t show you where supplies are and won’t answer question. I supportive team can make an otherwise unfamiliar area workable.

Postpartum, oncology and rehab.
Neuro & Trauma
Depends if you want and easy float or or you are actually looking to gain experience. I support hospitals that have a float system where you want to maybe cross train or looking for a potential future career. Assigned mentor and check off list that work toward credentialing.
For instance, if i am a Medical Surgical nurse and i "float" to the Telemetry unit, how do I get the best experience from that situation? Instead of pushing me aside because i do not have certifications, take a few minutes to speak with me about getting certifications and looking for opportunities to excel ---------NOVICE to EXPERT is reality, if you make it so.
