How do you ensure an IV doesn't infiltrate?

September 4th, 2023

Choose a needle gauge smaller than the vein being accessed so the inner cannula doesn't block the entire lumen of the vein. Confirm blood return during IV insertion to assure tip is in lumen of vein.

Secure IV well with tegaderm so it doesn’t move causing damage to vein wall. Educate patient on caring for his/her IV including limiting activity of that arm. Cover IV to prevent accidental dislodgment from catching tubing loops in environment; cover with elastic netting so easily uncovered for assessment of insertion site and surrounding skin.

If the drugs are diluted and administered correctly, blood flow around the catheter is adequate to dilute them further, and if the catheter is properly immobilized, an infusion won't cause pain. Discomfort or pain during an infusion indicates vein damage that will lead to infiltration.
