I worked as a psych nurse. It depends what population you want to work with. It ranges from pediatric to geriatric; and varying mental health disorders. Some facilities attend to certain needs. I started working with eating disorders — not acute inpatient; but “stable” patients. It wasn’t hard at all aside the EMR or when patients had acute exacerbations related to their mental health (dissociations; compulsive behavior). Then, I worked at an adult in patient unit within a hospital and enjoyed it. The staff was great; and many were passionate about what they did. Nurses work revolved around medication administration, assessing and monitoring patients especially the acute ones — self-harm, etc. Of course there are your court ordered patients; and those who are voluntary which can make the difference in care. Seclusion and restraints were utilized at times. We also worked with ECT patients. Honestly, in patient psychiatry within a hospital system is better than privatized mental health (in my opinion). You have access to more resources; and if unionized — you may have more security. It really help with emergent cases when the ER might be needed.
Long explanation; and I hope. If you’re willing to move—I really recommend Swedish Medical Center — Behavioral Health Unit in Ballard (Seattle).
