How can I get on the path to being a Labor and delivery nurse? Currently an Oncology RN/new grad working for 8 months on the floor.

I'm not an L&D nurse however, I did transition from PCCU to ER and then to ICU. It's easier to look at your hospital job openings and applying as an internal applicant. You could also look at affiliated hospitals closer to your home and apply to them as well. Doesn't hurt to know someone in that area as well.

You might want to take some OB/GYN CMEs or even get a certification in OB/GYN.

I am a labor nurse. You have to just start looking for labor and delivery residency openings. Knowing someone definitely helps because OB is a specialty, and desired by a lot of folks.

Start by getting in with the unit in your hospital. Contact the unit RN manager/supervisor and educator and see if you can schedule a shadow opportunity. While there, ask about what they look for in their new hires. Then highlight what you can bring to the unit. L&D nurses sometimes have little med/surg experience... what skills, as an Onco RN, can you bring that are atypical? Then be persistent that you'd like the opportunity to apply/interview when a position becomes available. Being in the same facility is already a plus.
