How can I avoid phlebitis when inserting an IV?

Use sterile technique.

Phlebitis usually occurs when corrosive medications enter into the vein and causing irritation to the inner lumen of the vessel. I’ve never heard of causing phlebitis upon insertion. You can puncture or “blow” the vein upon insertion by creating more than one entry way into the vessel. I love starting IVs, truly a passion of mine. The best way to get your technique down is inserting fairly quickly (with thick skin) but slowly guide your needle partly then only slide the catheter in. I never insert the needle all the way through.
