What are the important considerations when caring for living organ donors?
It can depend on the situation. Are they a direct donor? Are they donating to someone else for a better match for their loved one? Are they altruistic?
There are usually a wave of emotions, and the biggest worry is that their organ functions. Sometimes there is a surprising sense of loss. I tried to focus big on the positives. And manage their pain, sometimes the donors are so concerned with the recipient they don't stay ahead of their pain.
Overwhelmingly the donation goes very smoothly (in my experience) and the donors are discharged without incident.
I will say they do like to be congratulated and "loved" for their donation (as they should be-it's a BIG deal!), so try to balance your concern for the recipient with your gratitude to the donor.
The altruistic folks can be tricky-some are in desperate need of validation and recognition. I have had a couple of these donors that keep trying to "see" their recipient when it was supposed to be a "blind" donation.
Don't forget to tap into your team, they should all be well known to the donor and we always made it a point to make sure everyone on the team stopped by to offer their thanks.
