I am a new grad RN. Want to start my job in a speciality like OR. How do you answer the interview question as why do you want to be in the OR? Or they shortly go, so why OR?

You should answer the question honestly. What influence your decision to go into the OR? Did you have a positive experience during your clinical rotation? Did you research the position? Please don’t be discouraged about what you don’t know . If hired PeriOp training will be provided. If you’re not interested in MedSurg don’t waste your time there. It’s your career path, make decisions that will make you happy. Nursing is a very diverse profession. Good luck and take charge !

I know this will not be a popular response but: Please do not go directly into the OR, not that they would hire a new graduate. You need some experience with assessing patients and experience with all of the illnesses, comorbidities etc. that patients have. You will not get this by going directly to the OR. You would be expected to assess and care for patients after interviewing them for less than two minutes. You will get this background by going into Med/surg for a year or so. Many hospitals do offer new grad programs for Med/Surg and sometimes for L&D. Also, before going into the OR you will need formal training, such as an AORN sponsored Periop 101 class. Before you take this class the expectation is that you can actually care for patients with a multitude of problems other than their surgical concerns. Good luck.
