In our department we can have up to 6 patients at a time. Some are quick with labs and an injection, some are long with a type and cross and 2 units of blood, or maybe a chemo. Each day is different and patient loads are never the same but we have great teamwork and always help each other. In my opinion infusion nursing is the best nursing job out there. A bad day at the infusion center is still 10 times better than a good day on the floor. :-D If you are considering a job in an infusion center I would suggest asking if you can shadow in the department just to see what its all about. Best wishes.
7-8 patients per 8 hour shift. Usually 3 patients at one time.
I will follow the organization or departmental protocols.
It depends where the infusion is administered or taking place
Ex: Homehealthcare RN infusion visit is only you.
Oncology could be 1N:8Pt
Hospice: 2:1
Mary A, No I don't think 8 is too many if that's over an 8 hour shift. 8 at one time is too many though. We had 6 chairs a piece and rarely had them all full at one time. There were days when we would have 10 patients over the course of the day but never more than 6 at one time. Good luck!!
One on one for home infusion!!
