I’ve been an Oncology nurse for exactly seven months tomorrow. Wondering how my others deal with the long hours of work.
Take your scheduled breaks. Take a walk if possible, take care of self.
Get away from work if only for 30 minutes.
Worked as an RN, for > 30 years: the last 10 have been with insurance companies, working with chronic care disease management patients, at home; no nights, holidays, weekends; the other jobs, I had no life because of the demands of the job.
I been oncology over a year and like 4 months it hasn’t change. For example I got out at 2000 went in at 0645. Time management helps for sure when you can but it’s not always possible. In the ED I got out on time most the time cuz it’s just a pick up. I am
Trying to transfer back to the ED. Either way nursing is long hours and it sucks but the pay and time off is nice.. is it worth it? I don’t think so but I also want a Porsche so there is that
I remember this happening. I made sure that I took at least two days straight if I worked two or three days back to back. On one of my off days I would do something exclusively for myself to re-energize. I eventually went to an Infusion Center where I worked no longer than 10 hours (if we had to go that long of a day) and no weekends. No holidays
I love working the 12 hour shifts. I feel like I can deliver more care because I have more interactions with them bedside due to the longer hours I am with them. Also, the next 2-3 days i have them consecutively, i gain more insight about them as a patient and as a person. Furthermore, working the long 12 hour shifts only require 13 days of working in a schedule with 15 days off. So flexibility is definitely a big plus.
Is it long hours with suffering patients or the workload or boredom? Noc shift or days? How long are your shifts?
