What is the difference between outpatient and inpatient OR work?

February 25th, 2022

Based on my interpretation of this question, it seems clearly defined to me that the basic difference between inpatient and outpatient care in OR work is that inpatient care requires a patient to stay in a hospital overnight to be monitored by a healthcare team throughout their treatment and recovery. Outpatient does not need an overnight stay and could also be referenced as ambulatory care.
An example would be a patient who had to have a minor procedure in the OR but after certain period of post-op monitoring and observation, the healthcare provider determines that the patient does not need an inpatient stay. Hope this gives some clarity and a more concise understanding to the question. Ena-L, RN, M.Ed
