I am a new grad looking for a postpartum RN job but cannot find ANYTHING! Any tips from postpartum nurses? Do I need to start in another area first? All of the girls I went to school with got jobs in their desired specialty units!
Postpartum nurse for 20 years. Go to an open hire event and they will likely hire you on the spot. If not find out who the nurse manager is for the unit (call the hospital and ask who it is) or it might be online. Reach out to the manager. She can tell you what the hiring situation is. Best of luck Transition Nursery Nurse I LOVE MY JOB🎀
Take a job in Med Surg in the hospital you desire to work in . Then watch job postings from within . Your med surg experience gives the basic organizational skills that is invaluable Best wishes Rita
It really depends on what the department needs when hiring. The length of time and the amount of training varies for new grads, new grad in preceptor program, a nurse with other area experience and a nurse new to the hospital but with postpartum experience. For example, if the position is for night shift and most of the staff is newer nurses vs some with more experience, they will be looking for the PP experienced and might consider one with med/surg or other over a new grad. You could try to contact the nurse manager directly via email and express your desire to work in her department and find out what a candidate would need to get employed. I started working post partum 9 month after finishing school. I had applied 3 months prior to getting the job. Before working PP I was working in skilled nursing facilities. Keep trying and keep applying. Learn what you can until then about the area. Read nursing journals and article in PP care. Know how to do the assessments and what to do to prevent and identify the common complications
Hi, I’m a new grad as well. It has been difficult for me to find my desired specialty as well. I kept applying everywhere and finally found my desired specialty. Just keep pushing and keep applying everywhere. I have to travel about an hour for the job but I don’t mind it. Hope this helps. Good luck!
I think L&D is more likely to take new grads, and it’s the best place to start…with 19 years experience all over nursing, I would definitely recommend doing L&D BEFORE going to postpartum. It’s important to see & learn all that goes on there before caring for someone who has just been through it! Also, if something happens-postpartum can be a sad and serious place as well. It is better for YOU to gain confidence and knowledge in L&D, where it’s busier, more acute, and procedure/goal oriented…pp will be a slower pace most of the time, you will have many more patients, and will have to care for the infants as well, BUT, when that sad case comes along, you will need the patience and experience to care for the family that may have had a loss, or any birth with unexpected events or outcomes.
I hope this helps you! Stick with it, whatever you do.
If you’re willing to move, Winnie Palmer in Orlando, Fl may be hiring into MBU. We have plentyyyyy of new grads.
Same here. I even went to two job fairs not one person contacted me.
I’m in the same exact situation 😣
