I am a nurse with emergency department/ICU background . I am beginning to hate working in the hospital setting. Any suggestions on transitioning to hospice nursing? I am nervous about going into patients homes.
I was also an ED nurse that transitioned to hospice care. All you have to remember is to always respect the person's home no matter how they live. Especially at end of life it isn't our job to change how a patient lives. As long as you give genuine earnest care and respect the individual and families you will have no problems.
I have done both over my 30-year career. You have to be comfortable being placed in uncomfortable situations. The homes can be in pristine condition or something that you will be in and out of in a short time. I enjoyed the flexibility and managing my schedule. It was a great time in my career. The atmosphere was great, and the people brought me great joy and experiences.
I worked years ago as a Hospice nurse and loved it. It was a privilege to go into folks homes. It is a rather independent nursing practice. I'd call the doctors/providers as needed and tell them what I need to keep the patient comfortable. When I occasionally saw patients in the "projects" and it wasn't safe law enforcement officers didn't seem to mind escorting me in and out.
