I will be graduating in December with my BSN, when should I start looking for openings or applying? I'm also a veteran will that help me in anyway?

If you live near a VA medical center apply there, vets get preferential hiring. Also the benefits (especially leave) are better in federal facilities. You're a vet and used to bureaucracy, so you'll survive at the VA better than most nurses. I always appreciating having vets as nurses when managing there. I have all the empathy in the world, but I'm not a vet. Vets relate better to vets, in my opinion. Thanks for your service!

Check the facilities closest to you and find out if they have Nurse Extern programs. If so, apply as a NE because then you can transition to Graduate Nurse (GN), then RN when you pass the NCLEX. Most NE programs will schedule work days around school requirements...and that is helpful.

Never too early to start, I would look for residency programs that can help ease you into the nursing profession.

Thank you for your service. I am not sure if being a veteran will help you directly, unless you are applying for a job in the government. But as a tip, I would certainly point to your veteran status in your interviews, such as one time I made a mistake and learned from it was when I was in the army and this happened and I did this to correct my mistake, that sort of thing. Good Luck!

VETERAN!!! WILL THAT HELP?!
IT MOST CERTAINLY WILL/ DOES!!
PLEASE GO TO THE NEAREST VA HOSPITAL OR CBOC (Community Based Outpatient Clinic) ASAP!
Veterans earn prioritization above civilian applicants.

Please go to web site below:
vacareers.va.gov

Tap 3-Black Bar Lines top right, tap
“Benifits”
“Select Hiring Programs & Initiatives”

This Speaks in detail about Veterans’s employment within the VA.

Please see the quote below from the website.

“Veterans Employment Service Office (VESO).
Aims to attract, recruit, & hire Veterans into VA, while offering career preparation & transition services….
VA also implements a number of government initiatives that prioritize the employment of Veterans.”

VA PRIORITIZES THE EMPLOYMENT OF VETERANS

“For Information about these Programs [Veterans-Hire-Programs] please call the VHA HEALTHCARE RETENTION & RECRUITMENT OFFICE (HRRO) @ 1-844-456-5208.”

Also ask HR about the VALOR PROGRAM. Students in an RN program work on the units and are paired with an RN so they get on the job exposure & training in the captivity of serving as an RN verses or instead of as a Nurse Tech.

Per website, VALOR PROGRAM:
“ VA LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES RESIDENCY (VALOR) allows Nursing, pharmacy, and medical technology students who have completed their Junior year in an accredited clinical program, to gain experience @ a local VA facility.”
