What are the worst types of patient families to deal with and how do you handle?
Irritable patients are those with fear, anxiety, and lack of understanding for numerous reasons which reasons that cause behaviors that appear as anger!!!
I have been a nurse for 53 years. MS-Nursery- Cardiac etc. The best way to handle those patients is to acknowledge their thoughts and feelings, allow them vent appropriately, and ask questions. It is so important to maintain professional integrity with advocacy and add some humor. It has worked for me with the toughest of patients over the years.
The ones that show no gratitude and disrespect the nurses.
The worst type of patient families to deal with are the ones that are angry , won’t let you do your job and keep interfering with you doing your job.
Remember families may not present the way they really are. They are stressed and their lives may be changed forever. They must conduct themselves in a way not to interfere with the running or care of the unit. Engage social services, pastoral care, patient advocate to assist them and a conference with nursing and mds is very helpful to them
I've found the most challenging families are those that are unable to grasp the severity of the condition and reality of recovery or rather non-recovery and the push to do everything when everything just continues to create further distress and harm. That and expecting hospitals to find post acute placement for those without any options or funding and expecting hospitals to keep patients for extending time (years) with no discharge options.
The way that i deal with and handle this I just try to understand by talking with them , showing compassion and showing how thorough I am by allying their fears and concerns.
Iam deal worst patient her/his care of my skills, and positions, follow Dr orders, give a specious time to patient with sympathy, and it's my professional job.
