How long do I have to stay in a department before transferring to my desired specialty? I was an RN in the OR before moving to the USA and have been in the PCU for 2 months now.

Most places require a 6 month commitment,. If your if your transfer to a new department is accepted, then your current department can hold up your transfer for four weeks due to staffing shortages. This the way it has been. You need to research your hospital policies discretionally.

I would advise you to build your network and not complain about your current position. You were hired for an open position and you accepted it. Do an outstanding job, volunteer for grand rounds, get to know the supervisors, directors, and CNO. Then you can ask one of your supervisors or director for a referral to your desired unit. Some hospitals now require you to apply again for a different position because of billet change and access to certain areas needs approval. Nepotism is still around, but you’re new to the country, so networking is your best bet.
