I graduated from nursing school in 1984. I worked medical/surgical for about a year or so. The experience sharpened my assessment skills. Later when I worked ICU and ER, I was able to utilize my skills to survive in the environment. Some nurses go into specialty areas straight out of school. It works for some but not for all. Whatever you decide, be willing and eager to learn and study about everything that’s important to the nursing profession. Make sure that you join the American Nurses Association and your State Nurses Association. You need to know about what’s going on in the profession at state, local, and national levels.
