New job, major rift between 3 of the 4 RNs in the dept. separately, they’re saying negative things about each other and when together they are very tense and at each other’s throats. I’m neutral but 1 keeps trying to get me to stir the pot. Help!

Go to HR

Start with the nurse manager and make them aware of the situation and that it makes you uncomfortable. Be honest and let them know that this tension could potentially compromise patient care and safety. If you don't think that it will get resolved with the manager, you could try going to HR but, check to see what your hospital's policy in filing a grievance/chain of command. Have a backup plan such as another job in case it does not work out.

Wow, tough situation! Definitely stay neutral; the drama may be about egos. You might want to say to the RNs that you enjoy working with such a great group of hard working nurses, but you would love to have everyone get along. Maybe suggest a get-together outside of the stressful work environment?
