Is 1 nurse to 6 patients ratio in a telemetry unit of 45 bed is safe and ideal?

I work on a Med-Surg/Tele floor and legally, we can go up to 6 patients. My typical ratio is 1:5, 1:4 if we have great staffing. It also depends on the shift too. I think nightshift can safely have 6 patients at night usually whereas 6 during day is too much.

It depends on the acuity and how much support you have from the other nurses, the CNA’s and how organized you are., and if you are a new grad. I cared for 6-8 as a new grad back in 1996 and we started chemo, did peritoneal dialysis and several types of drips but at a set rate. It was a challenge and sometimes I wanted to scream but most of the time it was ok. You have to be able to ask for help and delegate. I always jumped in and helped without being asked and most of my co workers did the same

My niece just started last year as a new grad on a stepdown unit with 5 patients and she’s doing very well. When I worked in a stepdown unit way back, we only had three patients

So it really depends. After Covid nurses had to care for more patients and they will never go back to better staffing, in my opinion

I went on to cardiac ICU and my experiences before that really helped me to prepare for it, and develop great organizational skills

Most likely not the best situation.
