What is a good amount of time to orient when transferring to nicu? I’m a new grad in mother baby and have the opportunity to transfer to a level lll nicu in a few months. I will only have about 6 months exp at that time, and orientation is 6 weeks.
Mine was 12 wks long for NICU III orientation and I think you need everyday:)
I would say orientation of only 6 weeks is to learn where everything is located on the unit. I would ask to have a resource with you for ~ 6 months to help you , ask questions and just be there when you need a second person. I would have my own assignment but maybe one patient and you will know when you are ready for a second to coordinate your priorities and not miss anything. It will take a good year to feel totally comfortable with any situation you are put in.
A 6 week orientation to the unit maybe enough. However, orientation to caring for these little guys will be an ongoing work. Ask for a mentor with whom you can work side by side after you complete orientation. If you are serious about NICU, a certification maybe in your future.
I would say that six weeks is a good start
First of all, put your grown up pants on. 6 weeks is more than enough to give you the basics. Read. Watch videos, get ready. Find the smart person on the floor and strive to be like them. Not a fan of holding hands of new nurses until they feel “comfortable”.
