What are some tips for a nurse (with 7 years of working experience) starting a Director of Nursing position at a skilled nursing facility?
The DNS of a LTC SKILLED faility is expected to know about wounds, drains etc as well as geriatrics, supervisory and staffing experience, levels of care, incident investigation and report not to mention the rules and regs of your state administration and nursing board. I would familiarize yourself with the job description specific to the facility you have been hired at. Become familiar with the rules and regs for a LTC which may differ from a memory care or adult foster home or any other kind of care facility you have worked.
Best of luck and brace yourself! Administration jobs are very different from patient care.
DELEGATE DELEGATE DELEGATE! If you have an ADON, get with them and make a list of what responsibilities are strictly yours and strictly theirs. Help out but don’t burn out! It’s so easy to get caught up trying to do everything yourself!
