Dialysis nurse here who has been working in the field for the past 2 years. I want to transition to the acute care setting to gain more experience in a different specialty outside of dialysis (e.g. NICU, ICU, ED). Any tips on making the transition?

Hi Dialysis Fam! ๐Ÿ˜ Well, that's going to be hard. Dialysis is such a subspecialty with unique skill sets, and most hospital positions usually require 2 years of med-surg as a foundation. You can try applying for an RN residence, but those are taken by in-house and new grads very quickly. Or network with staff at your facility for an in-house transfer, or have friends at other facilities recommend you. If not, your best bet is contract work for some of those acute positions. Agencies can help get your foot in the door with your current nursing skills. After getting 1-2 yrs of acute field experience, applying anywhere else will be a breeze. Good luck!
