I'm graduating in June with an ASN and almost 50yoa. I'm concerned about starting a new career as a nurse so late in life. Does anyone know any new nurses that are older and how did they adapt to nurse life.
Good afternoon,
I am an older nurse and found no issues with age.
Hospitals are concerned with a nurse's ability to fit in, looking at life experience (if you are new, such as yourself) and character. Since your graduation is upcoming, I would suggest evaluating your previous/current Clinicals and see if you would consider working for any of the hospitals/facilities of your Clinicals. Since your Clinicals are still upcoming or behind you, you would easily be remembered, and likely be remembered by most of the staff.
It is also a good time to connect with anyone who you feel would give you a good reference for the future.
Good luck to you and your bright future.
Way back when, my own ASN graduating class had some over-50 members and all did well, but not all found a comfortable niche in hospital nursing. When I taught BSN students many years later, a large number enrolled in my classes were over 50; and again, all did well but not everyone felt they were comfortable in hospital nursing. Some preferred clinics or group/private practices or specialty office practice. You will earn more in a hospital setting, but if the physical stress is a concern, perhaps out-patient options might be something to consider. Hospice and visiting nurse are other options as well which might offer a less frenetic pace than a hospital unit. Good luck, and congratulations for being a determined "non-traditional" (age-wise) student of nursing!
