Does anyone have tips or advice for New Grad Nurses wanting to work in NYC in pediatrics or NICU? So far, the job search is super challenging in landing interviews.
I would say that if you have a BSN that you will be able to land a job in NYC but you might not be able to do NICU right away but maybe you would get a pediatric spot. Most places want you to have a one to two year experience of Med-Surg before going to specialized areas. It would give you a great basis to start from and usually once you are in the door at a hospital it is easier to transfer over to your desired specialty as current employees have the first shot for positions that open up before they are posted to non-employees. Good Luck in your search.
New grads typically need prior experience in med/surg before moving into peds. With NICU, you should have peds, ICU, &/or ER experience. New grads still have a lot to learn about nursing upon graduation. You have learned theory and been in some clinical settings but it’s not still not enough for specialty areas. Just my opinion after working 44 yrs in nursing.
Some hospitals require Medsurg experience first but others don’t, so you have to find out what the requirements are at the hospital you want to work in. I personally would recommend Medsurg experience first because you learn a bit of EVERYTHING which works to your advantage! Hope that helps
Depends on where you want to eork. A good idea is to search inner city hospitals which are more willing to hire new grads. You can get the experience you need. Try Bronxcare . They hire new grads all the tine and give the training for 3 months. Pediatrics is currently looking for nights a. You are crods trained in NICU/PICU and nursery.
