I am about to be a new grad and want to work in maternity/NICU but only have med surg offers. If I work a year or two in med surg will maternity units be more likely to hire me?

I felt the exact same way I wanted NICU right away but I had to work Med surg for a couple years first it was required back in the day. I don't regret it as it gave me great experience and then was able to move to NICU! I loved it. You can do it!!

I would find a good quality hospital that treats nurses well and work where you get hired and ask to float to the unit you want make some friends make sure they are your kind of folks and it is really what you want then show interest get them to tell you when someone is leaving in the shift you want it will be a good transition and you won’t have to prove yourself
