I am looking at a position that requires ACLS at hire. I don’t have an ACLS certification. Is it possible to take the course prior to the hire date and use the skills immediately on the job, or is this a skill that requires on the job training?

Yes, you may take this prior to being hired. In larger cities, non-hospital-based programs may be available, so do check. It is not necessarily a set of skills you will dive right into using if you've never done it before, but job experience will help you develop your skills with each cardiac arrest.

Years ago, I got my ACLS cert 2 weeks before a job start that required it. I didnt renew thus cert and recently, I applied for a job that required ACLS and they were willing to bring me on board with the idea that I would get the cert in the first 6 months of employment. I think you should ask and find out what is required.

Yes ACLS is a skill like BLS that is perfected through use. You may be required to have the certificate yet not be required to have ever used it. BLS is the foundation of ACLS. Once those skills are honed a trained person is usually on scene when ACLS is required 😀

ACLS is just a piece of paper (or it used to be), no one expects you to be proficient right out of the gate.
