I was a labor and delivery nurse for 41 years. In the beginning you could not get a specialty nurse job without 1 year experience in med/surg, it was a requirement. But towards the end of my career we did hire new nurses to labor and delivery in a new grad program. I don’t think mother/baby did in our hospital. We did have some new nurses training in labor and delivery go to mother baby after their training because they had trouble with the stress of L/D
I believe it depends on the hospital. If you want something bad enough be persistent. Go talk with the hiring manager and ask questions to see how you can get a position. Or ask what you need to do to get a job in that specialty. I wish you luck. It’s tough out there but don’t give up.
Many hospitals will take you straight out of school while some hospitals will require you to have 6 months to a year of experience
It all depends on the facility. We just hired some new grads into our Maternity unit - we'll see how it goes!
