I'm a new nurse that has been working on medsurg unit for the last 9 months. Mostly with geriatrics. I have been thinking about switching to pediatric nursing, any advice on how to adjust to the different units?
Hi. And good choice to switch to pediatric nursing as it is an area of nursing that is in great need. The best way to adjust is first of all make sure that you refresh on pediatric nursing care and Care Management of PEDs.
Patient to nurse ratio will be obviously a little lower, assessment just a little challenging but not as thorough as geriatric that have a lot of medical history, and you might at times have several sets of eyes looking at you taking care of your patient. Keep in mind growth and development is going to be a focus of your care plan versus comorbidities.
geriatric patients
There are obvious differences in pediatrics and geriatrics. Nursing skills require more precision for kids than adults. Communication skills in pediatrics must satisfy the cognitive levels of more than 1 person. For example, you may have to appeal to and tailor information for a parent and a child at the same time. The best advice I can give any nurse thinking of pediatrics, whether you start there or change specialties during your career, is to expect to have and create fun when you go to work. The more relaxed you are, the easier it is to connect with your pediatric patients. Parents respond favorably to peds RNs who make their children feel better. If you can master the art of caring for emotional needs of children, you can develop every other nursing skill you'll need. Sometimes a simple smile goes the longest way. Always bring a smile with you when you report for duty!
I did and I LOVE it! You’ll never look back! ❤️❤️
