After working in a hospital for 16 years. I started working as a school RN, I did take a cut in pay, but found working in the schools to be more rewarding (they are more pro nurse than the facility that I worked in), more supportive of the school nursing staff. I found school nursing to be less stressful, didn't have to work nights, weekends or holidays. Off all of the holidays and the whole summer break with pay. Had more time to spend with my grandkids, as my kids are grown. Found school nursing to quite rewarding.
It was great for me, I did it for 10 years! I also worked PRN at local hospital in my specialty also. I believe it’s a wonderful career for those in a certain season of life. With that, I mean, I had a son going into pre-k and a daughter in 5th grade when I started. We were all at the same campus for years! My son had epilepsy, so me being nearby was a nice reassurance also. It’s a little tough the first year learning it all. You’re basically a one person ER clinic for school aged students. Bandaids to broken limbs, concussions, seizures, severe allergies/anaphylaxis, diabetics, daily medications. I resigned at 10 years and have been a traveler in the NICU ever since! Looking back, I honestly don’t know how I did 5 days a week. 😂 It never seemed like a big deal though and having the summers off was nice!
