Hi, I am a nursing student. My goal specialty is L&D. I thought I wouldn’t have any issues getting a job after I graduate. But after reading here I am so scared I won’t be able to find a job. How hard has it been for recent grads to get a job?

Sorry, premature send! Depends so much on your region. Don’t let people on the internet scare you. I couldn’t get a first job in L/D even as a lactation consultant; worked in mother baby and then transferred to L/D after a couple years. Now I work in surgery. A first job doesn’t have to be a forever job! If you can’t get L/D right away think of it as a three year plan.

That is really not true! There are several Hospitals that will place you directly into labor and Delivery and train you right there as a new grad.....

I spent 8 months in medsurge before I got into L&D but we hire new grads on my unit all the time. It depends on the turnover on the unit; we have a TON of turnover on the unit I'm on, which is always a sign of a toxic work enviroment. The good news is that we always have jobs available and they're willing to take new grads; the bad news is how often they burn out. I'd say start at a community hospital or someplace small that'll have the time and patience to train you, as they'll be more likely to hire you and also set you up for success, which is essential on L&D.

You’ll be fine! Don’t stress about that stuff right now. Focus on finishing school and passing boards!! Lol. I’m a travel L&D nurse now (staff for 7 years) and I was told throughout nursing school I would never be able to go straight into my speciality. I knew the day I started school that L&D was goal. After I passed boards, my first interview was L&D and was offered the position the following day!! There is so much turnover in nursing rn as a whole, you shouldn’t have a problem. Many think L&D is “gravy” but it’s not. It’s blood, sweat and tears (some days). So, they work for 6 months to a year and leave, so rest assured you’ll find your dream job! Just keep studying!!!
