Do you feel the hearing screens performed during the first 24-48 hours after birth are generally accurate?
We have found that if you wait at least 24 hours, the fluid in the ears is much less of an issue. It IS a screening tool, so if either ear does not pass, further testing at a Hearing Center is warranted and ordered. I do feel that they are fairly accurate, as we have very few referrals and a co-workers daughter, who failed both ears, was discovered to indeed have significant hearing loss in both ears.
No, due to multiple factors; fluid in the ears, fussiness, background noise in nurseries…
i feel that is a question better suited for an audiologist to answer.
I was always told they are just a screening tool. If they show a problem additional more definitive testing can be done. So I think they are a fairly good test to identify a possible hearing problem.
