How can I get a case manager job when all those jobs require case manager experience? Help. Dying in bedside.
What kind of case manager job? Hospital vs long term care vs home health vs hospice all different to some degree.
Most case management positions for hospice do not require manager experience. You have to be able to deal with that type of nursing however. It can get a little tough but is very rewarding.
I have found that taking on a discharge planning opportunity, knowing the resources in your area and talking to other medical fields such as offices where they are doing a lot of case management can be very beneficial when looking into becoming a case manager. Wanda Bouvier RN
Not all companies require previous experience just the sincere desire to do homecare. There is also clinical supervisor positions to over see a group of case managers and their clients. Case manager nurses work just as hard as bedside nurses in hospital. You have to have excellent assessment skills as you are the only one at the bedside to make split second decisions. I found it challenging and very rewarding but is not as easy as you may think. You might ask if you can shadow a homecare nurse to get idea of the daily routine.
Apply for one. You need strong clinical nursing background. In the CM role you need to know the different health insurances and what they cover for the patient. Any CM dept should have a solid orientation so you can be successful. Lastly there is a CM certification you may obtain once you think you will be staying in that role. Best of luck.
