Has anyone done new grad residency? Especially for labor and del, how was your experience?
I did it and it was amazing, really gave me a full understanding of the OB picture and I still learned all of the basics as a new nurse that med surg provides (time management, safety, prioritizing tasks, IV skills…etc) I’d recommend looking into high risk OB facilities (I was at Loma Linda CH in SoCal), helpful for getting a good foundation and seeing the sickest patients.
Hi there,
if you get pay or even if you can afford doing a residency (assuming is at a lower rate) sure go head and do it. It will very good to have a good foundation. LnD is very unique and it will take some time before you actually feel like you know what you are doing... so if you have the option to get good preceptors at least do one year.
However, if you have multiple offers and another is paying better and offer a decent orientation you should be fine. I was oriented for near 4 months( teaching hospital, no residency)and then I followed my preceptors schedule for the next 3 months or so before I felt like I could actually manage a pt by myself without running every few minutes to ask questions...
but always ask if you are not sure, and even if you are sure but just want to verify :)
Lnd nurse 13 months here :)
I did! Right out of school I did the L&D residency for my Antepartum unit. Been there for over a year now.
I did! Don’t let people tell you that you can’t. I live in NC. I was a new grad, I got hired into the residency program on L&D and I’ve been here every since! You don’t need med-surg experience. There are so many positions open here in NC
Yes! Highly recommend because L&D is so specialized and you get just a couple weeks (well we did anyway) in school!
I am doing it right now ! I am 5 months in almost 6 months. I love it! At first it was challenging, but after a while you do get the hang of it especially if you have the right teacher, if not that its still ok because you can ask other nurses for help and you soon start doing things your way which makes things easier
I did in 2019 in the Central Valley and it was the best experience ever. I ended up not wanting to leave the hospital I worked for because loved the community they served and my coworkers. I’m currently in the Bay Area and see the difference in acuity and difference in population.
oh and if you really want to do LnD dont stop yourself thinking of going to med surg or something like that... if that is really what you enjoy you will get all the experience and skills you need there. However, if you want to have a more diverse experience you can always pick up shifts at other places or change specialties later on or get a part time doing something different...
good luck
You most likely need general nursing experience before entering l and d since it is a specialty. Consider going into med surg for the foundation and then move into l and d. There are new grad residencies for med surg, er, icu moreso than for l and d
