How do you advocate for a patient who you feel the dr is not taking seriously?
I felt my patient needed social services to intervene because he was a recently single man where his wife just died. He was in a wheelchair. His house was a mess and I felt he needed to be there to see social services. The doctor was pissed with me because I refused to discharge this patient and I put a request in for social services to at least speak with him. The doctor came to me and says I wish I never listen to you and I'm stuck with this guy. I said too bad I said this man needs help and I'm his advocate he's not going to leave while I'm here so I actually stayed with my patient until social services got there. I found out he was a veteran, gave him my business card. explained to him we help veterans through our Company B Task Force, where we would go out and help elderly veterans with their tasks at home whether it's food or cleaning or Lawn Care. he was seen, we got help and he became one of my dearest friend until the day he died. send time was a woman who literally walked into ER, told me when I needed her to void told me she could no longer walk. after 6 hours the dr d/c her home but I was seriously concerned. I refused to send her home, she was admitted and treated poorly on the floor. went to get an MRI, medically airlifted out to a larger facility where they did a spinal tap. There was pus in her spinal fluid and once treated she became well and able to walk again. Do not ever be afraid to advocate for your pt, but be ready to give rational to why you feel you think they need further care. Stand your ground. Id rather be wrong than to find out my pt died because I did not take the necessary steps to keep them safe and healthy. Hope you have a wonderful long career in nursing...Im on my 25th year and given a chance to do this again would have started younger...
