I am a new grad BSN/RN and I recently moved to Tennessee. I am interested in trauma/ED, derm/plastics, and aesthetics. I know it's a broad spectrum of things, but I am hoping for advice on what places would be best to work for and where to start.
I have worked in both areas. There is much more stress in Trauma/ED but you will see all kinds of different realms of nursing there it is fast-paced and you will see lots of sadness and deaths. I worked at a derm/plastics surgery center I was a Certified Surgical Technologist and then became an RN while there. I really enjoyed working in plastic surgery. On the other hand they had derm offices there and I would be so bored working in that area. It all depends on what you really want to do.
I worked my first year out of nursing school in an ER and loved that job. I saw patients with communicable diseases, trauma, assaults, as well as patients who were abused or needed to be referred to a specialist for all kinds of surgeries. In my over 70 years as a licensed RN, I would be bored with plastics for cosmetic beauty, but those cases that were from a major trauma or burns were interesting, as plastic surgeons seemed to be able to so many times create a miracle out of trauma and injured skin.... (burns....not so much).
You really can't take the advice of any of us, as all nurses eventually find their "HOME " through their HEART that speaks to you..
SO go where your heart most carries you....if you end up hating it, go down your list, or keep trying new jobs until your heart speaks to you!!!
If you are in Memphis, you should check out the Med aka Region One....theyvare an extremely busy trauma hospital.
