What types of things should I learn about before starting my RN job in gastroenterology?
I’d research the common GI ailments you’ll come across; gastric ulcers, Barrett’s esophagus, GERD, Crohn’s disease & UC, colon cancers, etc. Perhaps also do research into some common medications used to treat those ailments.
Will you be working in a clinic or an endoscopy center performing procedures?
I would catch yourself up on the anatomy and physiology of the GI tract. Also the most common ailments and treatments/diets. Good Luck! I love being a GI nurse.
Learning the G.I. anatomy will help you tremendously. Everything else you will learn on the job.:)
Ask plumber.
It would be really helpful if you learn about colon screenings and indications for colonoscopies. If your in a office where you are responsible for sending people for colonoscopy procedures reviewing basic colon preps
Make sure you like dealing with procedures that often get bad tedults
