Hello, How do I make my application look desirable to hospitals for New Grad Residency programs? I’ve only been accepted for one interview & it’s not the specialty I’d prefer. They say “no experience” but should I get some experience?
The nature of the new grad programs is to take new nurses and train them. So experience is not necessarily needed. And even if it is not the area you want, these programs look good on a new grad resume. At VA the new grad program rotates the new grad to different areas to learn. I think focus on what motivates you and sale on the reason you want to learn the new things. If you do not have experience, you dont. But the willingness to learn is a point. I say this as a graduate nurse and as a former Nurse Manager. Good luck.
Just try to get in, once you are in the system; then you change specialty.
Show that you are enthusiastic about learning. If you need a job as a new grad, just take it, even if you’re not happy with the speciality. You can always switch a year or two later and it will be good to get experience on our units.
