How do you deal with the emotional aspect of tracheostomy care?

September 20th, 2024

I'm not sure I understand---I've done trach care for 8 years & cared for trach pt's my entire career. I'm not an unfeeling person, but the only emotion I've had is the frustration with communication - pt can't talk & was usually POD 0-5 so pain was high, handwriting poor (& I can't lip read!!) Allow lots of extra time to allow pt to write out their needs/questions. Besides that, you're keeping the surgical site and all accessible parts of the trach clean (as best you can if it's sutured in place) and monitoring for s/s infection, bleeding/hematoma.
