Should I purchase my own malpractice insurance while working at an outpatient clinic? I'm not sure yet what they offer in that regard, but if they don't, where should I start searching to obtain my own? I'm a new grad and have no idea where to start.
Yes! As I used to teach my nursing students: there is a statue in law called "respondat superior" which means (in a nutshell) you must answer to your boss. If you harm a patient, even if the clinic has you covered by insurance, the clinic can sue you to recover thier financial loss when they pay the patient's claim. You will then be responsible to them (your boss) to pay back this amount. If you are wise enough to have your own malpractice, your policy will pay what you owe to your clinic (boss). ALWAYS have yoru own malpractice insurance.
You should always have your own insurance. Your employer isn’t there to take care of you, and do you really want to depend on them when they need someone to blame? NSO does a new grad discount, is less than $150 annual. Smart nurses carry insurance.
