Tips for getting into a new specialty? I want to move from adult health to NICU

October 26th, 2024

If you work in a hospital setting, introduce yourself to the NICU manager letting them know you are interested to change your career path. Show your enthusiasm and commitment when asking if they can give you any direction to achieve your goal. Also take your resume when talking while pointing out your past education and work accomplishments.

They just may have a position and be willing to train you or can suggest education courses that that facility may offer. Another point, you many ask if at all possible to shadow without pay a few shifts, this will do two things, one prove your seriousness and will also let you see first hand if you really want the change. ( I have done this once or twice in during my career and it paid off - I got the position)

Lastly, you can ask your NICU educator, what path you need to take to work in the NICU and if there is any classes offered. It also do not hurt to get to know some of the NICU staff that can give you information also. The best to you

Before making the switch, see if your health center will allow you to float to the NICU to make sure it something you are interested in. I'm sure you could pick up extra time to shadow someone. Make sure you get the orientation needed. It will make the world of difference.

Well I recently made the same transition, luckily my hospital has a level 2 NICU and they had an opening so I applied. If you already work in a hospital and it has a NICU see if you can shadow one of the nurses.
