From an RN’s perspective, what makes a hospital a “good” hospital to work for?
Fair pay. Safe staffing. Supportive management. Holding patient responsible for physical, and verbal abuse! Strong training structure. Fun environment to work in(work doesn’t have to dreadful)
Safe staffing ratios!! Management that values education and policies that will protect patients as well as your license.
Safe pt to staff ratio
SAFE RATIOS! that is most Important.
safe and supportive working conditions
Team support
Fair pay
A good hospital to work for is one that practices shared governance. One where the leaders round on the employees and have a good idea of what really goes on in the hospital.
When the hospital is well staffed every shift, making sure that the Nurse Patient ratio is not over bearing for the nurses, as well as having good managerial team at the top that listens to the voices of the staff.
One that provides good support on the floor, resources to use to get work done in timely manner, appreciates the work we do as nurses by offering incentives (pay raise), team building activities outside of work
Extra resource nurse to help, break nurse, mandatory 30 and 45 minute breaks, support team such as turn team phlebotomy IV team: no one cares about magnet when a nurse do all the work!
Culture, truly caring about your employees, growing them into roles they are interested in, and a safe place to work where all concerns can be brought forward and acted upon.
When a hospital realizes you are your home person first (parent/spouse/partner) and respects those boundaries!
Just culture
Zero tolerance for bullying
Excellence, stewardship, collaboration, integrity
Non-bias
No backstabbing from either the staff or managers
A hospital in which accountability falls at all levels and transparency is the benchmark from senior leadership down. A hospital that recognizes the strains put on their nursing staff and does everything in their power to make the nurses proud to be at that facility. Where you build up your greatest commodity, they will see that and carry your facility through any storm. Remember who spends 24/7 at the bedside and be relenting to recognize the hard work, sacrifices and dedication it took to get you to your highest level.
The availability of medical equipment and care that is provided
Reasonable pay and adequate support staff such as RT, Tech and Phlebotomy etc...Healthy positive work environment
A hospital that supports the staff. And they know what the needs are.
Happy employees leads to quality service which in turn leads to delighted clients
A good hospital to work for cares about their nurses as people not as just as another cog in the wheel. They care about their patients more than their profits and have safe patient to nurse ratios that keeps patients safe and the nurses not burnt out.
A positive learning environment!!
Low turnover rate despite pandemic, benefits, educational opportunities and continuing education and staff/patient ratios.
Care about their staff and respect their ideas.
Shared governance and the ability of the front line RN’s to have decision making power over the care they give to patients
Staff appreciation and recodnition that staff have lives outside of the hosputal.
Staffing ratios. Med surge max of 6 pts.
RT,CNA and phlebotomy present
Flexible schedule
Whole heartedly agree as the same answers keep popping up, just came here to say it’s so sad that there are very few hospitals that truly meet that criteria or are even willing to try to improve.
Showing their respect for who you are and what you do. Providing you with the resources you need to do your job properly.
Having enough staff
Pay your worth with a non toxic work environment. Everything else is just a perk in my opinion. I don’t have an opinion with work ratios because I work in the cath lab, but that might make the list of you are a bedside nurse. I hope that helps
A hospital with support from administration.Hospital that cares about the welfare of both patients and employees not about scores and numbers and include benefits for good hospital to work for.
When all the equipments needed to carry a nursing procedure are readly available at that haspital
It must have policies that apply to everyone. No exceptions. It must provide mentorship for all levels of nursing.
Managers should walk the floors also and not sit behind the computer screen the entire shift. My instructors made it clear we are to know what is happening before we enter the room; the managers that don't walk the floors occasionally have many safety issues as I have visited family members and friends. The hospital is better with more support even a simple walk on the floor by management.
Worked in a good hospital where the nurse manager was first in the room ventilator/alarms/codes or urgency dictated.
To me....the most important part is teamwork
People you can depend on
People that have bad days but are good nurses so you work a little harder and maybe the next day it's a bad day for you and they catch you
I would almost work for free to have good teamwork rather than make big dollars and not have it
To me - it's so important
Conducive working environment and good pay
Automy of RNs with shared governance. An employer who values the hard work and stressful nature of the job.
The people and culture
Plain and simple...patients come first!
Patient and staffing driven . I wish most of the hospitals adhere to their missions statements . So far I have not seen one that does that to the perfection . They are still striving . Despite the organizations provided more resources ,advanced Technology and continuing education . The nursing job is getting much harder to perform . The healthcare are facing tough challenges with the new generation coming to work in healthcare . They come out with high school gangsters attitude. It sad to see now they addressing ,” RACISM in nursing “ . If you working In a unit and they don’t accept. Run fast before they gang up on you . If not each unit a political clicks. They will take you off your position.
Teamwork, good staff and management participation, good communication
A good Hospital to work for Is an institution that believes and respects the capability of their own staff, provides them with enough resources to do their Jobs right and safe . Provide program and conferences Helps and supports their nurses professional growth. Unfortunately , most Hospital nowadays wants you to "Clear the Forest with your Own Bare Hands " and does not pay attention to the struggles and sacrifices of their Nurses, and still set a high expectations to get the Job done.
Magnet status says a lot. As the hospital I worked for deteriorated with new leadership, it failed to renew magnet status and the exodus of nursing staff was correlated with this change.
Well Kaiser Permanente has all
The qualifications to be called the best Hospital to work for in the USA. Good medicine, good people, great pay.
Treat everyone fairly regardless of origin.
Staff accept new staff and let them feel welcome
everyone entitle to the same training
anyone can work over time if they want
don't dig in to people personal life. If they want they will offer their life story.
workers most not bully and harass other workers.
Always treat each other professionally
In my own view there should be a good team work and clear communication among staff and management
Working in a healthy environment is key!
Knowing your working with kind and caring staff that support you.
A salary higher or close to the highest paying salaries in the area, safe staffing, and a culture that has staff nurses involved in career development as well as seeking their input in approving new hires. Shared governance is also a big factor too.
Have qualified staff and appropriate equipment
The sense of Team. When my work is done, I like to check in with others, as at some point, they'll be ahead and check in with me to see if can help. In Short Stay, as on other Units, this helps build that Community Spirit that is so very much a part of working in a hospital.
Manager’s support and house sup fairness. I worked at a very small hospital. The manager was off duty due to illness but once back th Mgr was unable to work out the schedule appropriately. It was a mess prior to their illness and after their return. And they don’t accept criticism AT ALL. Having no Mgr support brings on super low staff morale. And we all know where that leads to. Which leads to house sup support and fairness. If there is a lot of favoritism going on (which happened at my small hospital) then travelers get cranky. Like a mental disease that spreads insidiously. Hard to combat as a traveler. Once I finished my 13 I refused to renew.
For me a good hospital means a space where you can learn every day in a great environment.
Administration values their RN staff members through continued education, safe staffing, as well as adequate resources in an environment conducive to professional growth with respect and collaboration of all team members to deliver outstanding care to our patients
An environment that is supportive of its nurses.
Hospital culture, values. Incentive pay & benefits is 2nd for me. You want to work somewhere you enjoy and proudly represent.
One that values its staff, leaders that care about the employees and the patients and work to keep them safe.
Good governance
The most important aspect in my opinion is the work culture. Because it determines the amount of support and resources both the nurses and patients have at their disposal
Increasing recovery rate and decreasing death and zero infection rate makes hospital a good hospital...... It will happen when proper facilities are available for staff
Safe patient t
Fair pay, management communication with staff.
A few characteristics of "good" hospitals are those that openly-talk about pay structures, encourage personal growth, respect work/life balance, and those where administration doesn't change with the the winds. This usually also accompanies higher employee retention and engagement. A workplace that fosters positivity usually has the happiest folks around and that is where you want to stay!
I honestly feel that work environment champions the characteristics of a good hospital to work.An environment that is all inclusive with respect to recognition of every parts contribution, evaluative feedback on performance and a conducive environment for personal and career growth.
Chain of command is clear, job description well defined, retaining programs in place. Autonomy given when it is clear that the Nurse understands or knows where to search or get help.
Friendly Supervisors and incentives to stay.
Hospital has to have a culture where nurses or all the staff are considered as family not an employee
4 words: none toxic work environment. Now good luck trying to find one 😆😆. El dorado and the fountain of youth would be easier to find. The cities of Zion, Aryana, Atlantis and Aztlan would be easier to find than that. Wekcome to healthcare 😁 try not to burn out.
But seriously, I have found that the more clicky a department, floor or unit, the more toxic, and thus the more unpleasant it will be for that individual who for some reason find him or herself invariably outside the click.
Insightful progressive leaders that understand you are a valuable team member with intentions to be a strong provider of superior care. You are set up for success from the time you are hired by leaders who build trust by communicating with empathy and curiosity. A transparent exchange by you and everyone on your team is paramount.
Work load and resource availability.
Staffing ratios!!!!!!! Market value pay. What are we really worth?
Supportive employees and administration, then the patients get the quality care they deserve, team work makes the "dream" work!
Yes

Compensation. Compensation. Compensation. Also, location!
