Is it true that labor&delivery nurses don’t like to teach new grads?
I loved teaching new grads in L&D! My approach was they didn't know anything and was a blank slate so I could teach them all I knew. I'm proud to say many went on to be great nurses!
I would not say that we don’t like to teach new grads. I have been doing this for almost 30 years. It is a huge help if a new grad has some experience though. It is hard when starting out knowing how to approach a patient with confidence, how to start an iv quickly when needed and just knowing danger when you see it. In labor and delivery your patients are generally young and healthy but when it goes south it goes quick. Recently we have had some new grads some very interested in learning. That’s great but some who have come in with no interest and sit on their phones in down time or turn down assistance or tell me how to do something. That’s not how to be accepted by a preceptor.
